Black Locust (Robinia Pseudoacacia) 2-3' bare root tree
Zones: 4-9
Canopy Tree: May grow to 80'
Nitrogen fixer, wildlife attractor (polinators, blooms in mid may into June), living fence (sharp thorns up to 1/2 inch)
Black, also sometimes called 'yellow' locust is a fast growing pioneer species, extremely hardy, and terrific for a living barrier. Spreads rapidly from near-surface runners that may be stopped with 24" depth of rhizome barrier. The wood burns quite hot as firewood, and is resistant to rot, making it excellent for outdoor building, furniture, and tool making. From the middle of May through June, Locust Flowers are where you will find most of the honey bee population, if locust trees are available.
